Working With
Dr. Joe
My Functional Medicine practice is located in New Orleans, LA. I am Board Certified in Family Practice and licensed in Louisiana and Texas - patients living in these states (or those living internationally) can work with me either in person or via telemedicine.
If you live in other parts of the country, I can work with you following an in-person visit to establish care.
Initial Appointment
Dr. Joe thoroughly reviews all cases prior to being seen, so all appointments can be as productive as possible.
Your first visit is 45 minutes long and is focused on identifying the root issues driving your health concerns and planning treatment. This visit costs $500.
Follow-Up Appointments
Follow-up appointments cost $250 and are 30 minutes long. If you need more time, 45 minute appointments are available for $350.
Some patients only need a few visits to get back on track, while those who have been sick for years may take more time. Dr. Joe's priority is to help you heal as quickly as possible. Most patients follow-up every 4 weeks until they are well.
Can Dr. Joe Help Me?
Yes!
I have helped patients in more than a dozen countries, for over a decade.
This experience has helped me to identify the best tools from functional and traditional medicine, and to learn what does and doesn't work to improve symptoms and health.
I frequently helps patients who have struggled despite already working with other doctors because of this practical and unique approach.
Listen to stories from my patients here, or check out my youtube page for interviews, talks and conversations with patients.
How long will it take to feel better?
My priority is to help you heal as quickly as possible. Most of my patients with SIBO or chronic GI issues generally feel 75% better within 4 months. Metabolic issues such as diabetes generally responds quickly to treatment and improvement is seen in weeks. Patients made sick by environmental toxicity generally feel better month after month, but full recovery takes more time.
Do I Need Labs Before Being Seen?
No labs are required before being seen - your history, current symptoms and physical exam are the most important pieces of information that I needed in determining how to get you better.
I recommend bloodwork and testing on a case-by-case basis.
I am happy to review any labs or imaging that you have already done prior to your visit (simply upload these documents to the portal).
Will my insurance company reimburse me for your fees?
Yes. While I do not bill insurance, you are free to request reimbursement for my fees from your health insurance. After visits, you'll be able to download a document called a superbill from your patient portal, which contains all of the medical codes pertaining to your office visits to submit to your insurance company.
I am an independent provider who works directly for my patients. This gives me more time with my patients and the freedom to recommend what is best for your health, rather than what is best for an insurance company's profit margin.

I don’t live in Louisiana or Texas. Can I become a patient?
Patients out of state commonly travel to my New Orleans office to establish care with me. These visits are scheduled for 2 hours and cost $850. For the first 45 minutes of this visit, we will review your history, symptoms and do a physical exam. Then, I'll write up your initial recommendations, and we'll spend the remainder of the time reviewing those recommendations together. After establishing care in-person we can utilize telemedicine for followup visits.

About
Dr. Joe Mather, MD, MPH & TM
I am a Medical Doctor practicing in New Orleans, LA where I see many patients suffering from complex and chronic diseases.
Because so many people struggle for years trying to recover their health, often spending thousands of dollars chasing dead ends, I'm passionate about making functional medicine cost-effective and practical.
I graduated from the Tulane University School of Medicine and the School of Public Health in 2011 and completed my training in Family Practice in 2014. I treat many conditions but have expertise working with GI health, mold and heavy metal toxicity. When I'm not working with patients you'll find me playing with my three kids, exercising, meditating or playing the drums.
